The Garden Route's Tsitsikamma Forest

The Tsitsikamma is one of the most pristine forest areas in the whole of the Garden Route. Deep river gorges cleft the plateau as they make their way down to the sea, creating spectacular waterfalls and deep kloofs. Indigenous trees, fynbos and commercial pine plantations cover the rolling hills in a deep green cover. Tsitsikamma is a Khoi word meaning "place of abundance or sparkling water" and when you drive along the beautiful roads there is no question why. It is one of the most spectacular stretches of forest between the Bloukrans River in the west to Eerste Rivier in the east and is bordered on the north by the imposing Tsitsikamma Mountains and in the south by the Indian Ocean.

There are so many activities to do in the forest that visitors are spoilt for choice. Whether you are an adrenaline junkie or prefer to relax and soak in the beauty, Tsitsikamma Forest has something for you. Bungy jumping, hiking, guided bridge walking tours, picnic sites, swimming and spectacular trees - there is no time to waste. One of the biggest attractions is The Big Tree. This Yellowood giant is estimated to be  about 800 years old, it stands 36.6 metres high and has a circumference of almost 9 metres.

Wondering where to stay? Cape Country Routes suggests anyone of these spectacular holiday destinations to spend your time in the Garden Route, Botlierskop Private Game Reserve, Knysna Log Inn and Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve. Visit our website for more info on these destinations.
