Augusta de Mist - Digging beyond the obvious attractions

Old Gaol Restaurant

As the Old Gaol Coffee shop gained an ever-widening reputation for its traditional foods (originally ‘Melktert’ baked in a copper pan and ’Roosterkoek’ baked over the coals), so the menu has grown, to include authentic dishes like old-fashioned chicken pie, bobotie & sambals, waterblommetjie or tomato bredie, Cape curries and the ever-popular lamb shanks or oxtail.

All typical Daily Specials that reflect the love of great food and the commitment of this proud and spirited team.
This determination was fully tested when the coffee shop was unable to extend the lease at the original museum premises – but this wonderful old house, fortuitously, became available on Swellendam’s historical Church Square!

Take a weekend off just to visit Old Gaol, they're worth it! - and stay nearby.

Recommended places to stay:
De Zeekoe Guest Farm - Oudtshoorn
Augusta de Mist Country House - Swellendam

Augusta de Mist: History behind Swellendam

Did you know that Swellendam is the third oldest town in RSA?
It is now a town with 28 072 inhabitants with over 50 National Monuments, most of them are buildings of Cape Dutch architecture. Early travellers and explorers who visited the Cape in the 16th century traded with the Khoikhoi people who lived on these shores and in the interior. when the Dutch East India Company established a replenishment station at the Cape in 1652, trade continued inland as far as Swellendam (which was declared a magisterial district almost 100 years later, in 1743, becoming the third oldest in South Africa).

Swellendam was named after Govenor Hendrik Swellengrebel - the first South African born Govenor - and his wife Helena Ten Damme.
Lady Anne Barnard

Many Famous travellers visited this small town; including Francois Le Valliant, Lady Anne Barnard, William John Burchell, and Thomas Bowler.

In time, a village was established beyond the Drostdy, where artisans including numerous wainwrights and traders settled. To travellers and explorers, the services of the village folk were indispensible, as Swellendam was the last outposr of civilisation on the eastern frontier...

Make your way down to stay with us here at Augusta de Mist, and see the old monuments for yourselves.
Soak up the history that surrounds us everyday, and have a story to share!

Share your stories and favourite holiday snapshot from your trip to Augusta de Mist on our Facebook page.

We love to hear them all!

Shop in Style!

This is the first of it's kind on the Garden Route - an upmarket, chic Christmas shopping experience in a beautiful country venue setting. Soak up the magic of the festive season at the Christmas Concepts Fair, enjoy a great day's shopping and leave with a hoard of heavenly gifts.

This spectacular Christmas Fair brings together more than 40 exhibitors from all over the Western and Eastern Cape in a festive three-day extravaganza of quality and fun.

The Chapel and Old School is a venue where tradition meets modernity; historic features in architecture and bespoke furnishings come together with top-class facilities which, during the Fair, will be further transformed into something magical. Exhibitors will display their goods in their own 'shops' in and around this stunning venue and the public attending the market will be able to spend the day browsing at leisure.

Apart from being able to find a dazzling array of original gifts for everyone on your Christmas list, visitors will be able to indulge in tasty treats from the Luxury Deli Hall, sip champagne with strawberries in the gardens, enjoy a home-style meal at the venue's Riverdeck restaurant, participate in the tasting of some fine wines from top wine estates or become inspired home decorators with ideas from workshops by trade specialists.

Van Loveren: We need your Votes!

Christina's at van Loveren's Bistro has been nominated for a #KLINK tourism award!

"Comfort Zone"
Award for best bistro or café on a wine farm

This award goes to the best bistro or café in the Cape Winelands at a venue that combines quality, cuisine, setting and service without all the frills of silver service. We were looking for venues that source local, artisanal farm produce and showcase good food and wine in an informal, relaxed style as well as offer value-for-money on own wines and wines served by the glass.
